Coffee Break–Volume 194

Posted on June 25, 2025 by Jennifer Glenn

March is always, by far, the busiest month of the year. Both of our boys were born in March–so there’s a lot of birthday celebrations, plus there’s spring break. Sometimes even Easter is in March–thankfully this year we got a reprieve. Here’s all we accomplished, enjoyed, learned, tried and remembered.

1. Morgan’s 18th Birthday. How? How I ask you? Didn’t I just give birth to him yesterday? It’s not possible that he’s already 18. I have to admit–he does look more man like than when we left the hospital, but I am having a bad case of time warp. For those of you who have children–young or old–you will understand my sentiment when I say: he grew up WAY too fast.

I remember when he was a baby, how we were so impatient to know what his hair would look. So Super Rockstar photoshopped a mop of hair on a photo of his newborn baby pictures. It was nothing compared to the beautiful curly hair that came in–so much better than we could imagine. And that’s him –he always proves to be so much more than we could have asked for or hoped for. He’s strong spiritually, physically, mentally and emotionally, kind and thoughtful (so much more than his toddler years seemed to indicate), creative, funny, and has the most fantastic laugh.

He’s struggled a lot in life–seizures when he was young, diagnosed with ADD in elementary school, struggled with depression along the way, and has felt lost, lonely and rejected a lot. But he is so resilient. His faith in God is growing and he has a vision of what he would like his life to be, what he would like to do, and where he would like to go. He’s on his way to becoming a man and it’s thrilling to watch. I never knew that being a Momma would include equal parts tears of joy and heartache. But it is so cool to see your child just—BECOME.

For his 18th birthday we loved celebrating him–with all his favorite snacks and treats, gifts he asked for and going to his favorite restaurant for dinner. Years ago, Super Rockstar made his very first birthday cake. Little did he know–it would become a tradition (and requirement) for him to decorate birthday cakes every year for our boys. We always let them choose the theme and there’s been some tricky ones. This year Morgan couldn’t come up with any ideas, so Super Rockstar asked him if he could duplicate his very first one. AND we had him pose for a picture wearing the sweet little train hat and red kerchief from his first birthday party (it should surprise no one that I keep EVERYTHING). Did I mention that he’s also a really good sport when it comes to humoring his parents need for nostalgia?

2. Top Golf Birthday Party. Several friends came to celebrate Morgan’s birthday with him at Top Golf (along with his brother). Super Rockstar and I just sat in the bar and let him “host” his friends–ordering food, laughing and flirting with the waitress. We loved watching from afar and then of course paying the bill afterward. My favorite are the cards he was given by two of his friends.

3. A day trip to Deckers. For Spring Break we decided to just lay low at home–watching movies, sleeping in, and being lazy. But the last day we decided we needed some fresh air and time away from screens, so we drove up to Deckers, CO. This has been a long-time favorite fishing spot. We took all our gear, and the boys brought their outdoor “survival” backpacks, Morgan brought an airsoft rifle, and we spent the day fishing, wading through the water (in our fishing waders–otherwise it’s brrr cold), I took Barney for lots of walks, and he snoozed beside me while I read on the riverbank. It was a perfect warm day, and we all came home smiling big. Being on the river in the mountains is our happy place.

4. Dr. Seuss Day. Super Rockstar has a long-time tradition of reading to kids on Dr. Seuss day. He has several favorites that he brings along to read and takes time to teach the kids “proper” sound effects.  I’m not sure who has more fun–them or him.

4. Grayson’s 16th Birthday. I can’t believe it was Sweet Sixteen for Grayson. He is SUCH a typical teenager in every way–goofy, awkward, tells inappropriate jokes (much to Super Rockstar and Morgan’s delight), has endless energy, eats too much junk food, loves video games, is very interested in girls (he regularly looks up “pick up lines” and asks me if they’re any good), and keeps us all on our toes with his antics. He had a great day–getting lots of junk food and gifts and then we went to Texas Roadhouse for his birthday. Watch the video to see the fun way our waiter celebrated his birthday.

5. Movies and Shows to Watch–Episode 98. Just click the link to read about the movies and shows we watched in March.

6. Books I read. I’ve been reading the Sue Grafton alphabet series. Long ago, I found out that one of my favorite authors–Janet Evanovich (who has written a fantastic series about a bond agent named Stephanie Plum) –was inspired by this series of books. Each one starts with a letter of the alphabet (A is for Alibi, B is for Burglar, etc.) and revolves around a PI named Kinsey Malone. I really enjoy the mystery and drama of them. This month I read A, B, and C.

7. My Favorite Memes.

As always, I would love to hear from you.
