Turkey and Dumplings

Posted on January 2, 2019February 11, 2020 by Jennifer Glenn

Of all the recipes I have shared and will share in the future–this one is my absolute favorite.   Once a year Super Rockstar makes this for us on a cold, cold day.

Turkey and Dumplings
Author: Tim Glenn and Nonnie

Ingredients
  • 1 lb cooked turkey (or you can use chicken)
  • 6 Cups Turkey broth (or chicken)
  • Dumplings
  • 2 Cups Flour
  • salt and pepper to taste
  • ¼ Cup Butter
  • 4-5 Tbsp Cold Water
Instructions
  1. Place the turkey and broth in a large pot and heat through (you can also put it in a crock pot and cook and simmer it for a few hours)
  2. Make the Dumplings: Mix the flour with the salt and pepper. Cut in the shortening (or butter). Add cold water 1 Tbsp at a time until dough clings together. Roll it into a ball. Roll out the ball to ⅛" thick. Cut into 1" X 2" strips.
  3. Remove the meat from the pot and bring the broth to a boil. Drop the dumplings in one at a time and stir them around so they don't stick together.
  4. Cook for 15-20 minutes
  5. Add the meat back to the pot and heat through.
  6. Serve hot and enjoy!

The ingredients for this meal begin WAY back on Thanksgiving for us.  We cut all the extra meat off of our turkey and then boil the carcass in water for a couple of hours.  This gets ALL the meat off the bones and makes a delicious broth. We then store it in our freezer until the BIG day when those frigid temps hit the single digits.

He got the recipe for the dumplings from his grandmother, Nonnie, many years ago.  I think she would be proud of him for making this delicious meal for us every year.

Mix the turkey and broth in a large pot. You can also use a crock pot and let it simmer for a few hours.

Make the Dumplings: Mix the flour, salt and pepper, and then cut in the butter.

Add the water and form it into a ball. Roll the ball out into 1/8″ thickness.

Cut the dough into 1″ X 2″ strips.  Remove the meat from the pot and bring the broth to a boil.  Drop the dumplings in one at a time and stir to keep them from sticking together.  Cook for 15-20 minutes and then add the meat back in.

Serve it hot.

This is so delicious.  Serve it with some toast and a cold glass of milk and your tummy will be extra happy.
