In a galaxy far, far away…..

Posted on September 29, 2018 by Jennifer Glenn

In a galaxy far, far away…deep within the recesses of Super Rockstar’s imagination–our two boys dream room came to life.

If I haven’t told you before–I have an amazing husband.  Super Rockstar not only is a great singer, but he is also an amazing husband and an incredible Daddy.  Since becoming parents–I won’t lie–we have spoiled our children mercilessly.  Maybe it’s because we had to wait so long to have children (12 years into our marriage), but mostly I think it’s because we are just grown up children–reliving our childhoods through our boys.

That all being said–Super Rockstar takes things to a whole new level when it comes to bringing fantasy worlds to life for our young boys. Both the boys had amazing baby rooms all done up to the absolutely best:

Morgan’s Nursery:

Grayson’s Nursery:

and then their big boy rooms–Oh. my. goodness.  Just look at the beds he made for them:

Morgan’s:

Grayson’s:

Shortly after he finished Grayson’s room–the boys decided they wanted to share a room. They really love being together and I love having an extra room ( although Super Rockstar has taken that one over for yet another of his talents–painting)

But, since they are a lot bigger now (4th and 6th grade), we decided they needed a bit more mature theme for their room.  Because Super Rockstar has come through in a BIG way over the years (he even built a pirate ship in our back yard),

our boys have a bit over the top expectation of what he can and is willing to do.  Grayson’s first idea was wanting some sort of jungle bed with a slide and trees and animals.  Morgan wanted an army tent with artillery and camo…no wait—a spy theme with hidden compartments and his own computer set up in his room (um…no). Their imaginations ran wild.  I could see the look of panic in Super Rockstar’s eyes–not wanting to disappoint his boys, but quickly seeing how out of hand this could get.

Then the newest Star Wars came out this past year (thank you movie producers). Both boys LOVE Star wars–so we had a theme.  But, what kind of beds could he make for two boys that share a room, but need their own space, that is Star Wars themed, and will get them through the next 3 or 4 years?  In one of the last scenes in the movie–an idea started to come into focus–

Heavy Assault Walkers.

As soon as the boys latched onto this idea–Super Rockstar did too.  The wheels started turning and the plans started being made.

Step 1: Purchase 2 loft beds.  Originally we wanted wood ones so that he could easily make pieces to drill to the base, but we quickly found out that wooden loft beds can cost a fortune.  Always on a budget, we opted for inexpensive metal ones from IKEA.

Step 2: Outline a plan.  Most of the time he builds something, he’ll maybe make a quick sketch just to show me what he’s thinking, but the details are hidden in his amazingly creative brain.

Step 3: Collect materials.  Every time we went to garage sales this past year–he would collect bits and pieces he thought he could use and then of course there’s multiple trips to the hardware store to get needed items.  This step usually requires a few recon trips of just strolling up and down the aisles imagining what would work best where.

Step 4: Construction.  This is by far the lengthiest step.  Since he works a full time job there’s not always a lot of spare time–so weekends and evenings are spent cutting, sanding and painting.

Step 5: Putting it all together. Ideally, he wanted to build these in the boys room–just so he wouldn’t have to keep going up and down the stairs when things needed to be re-cut or whatever.  But, since the boys needed to still have a place to sleep–all the construction happened in the garage.  Putting it together meant lots of retrofitting, doing and re doing, some curse words here and there and a full day of assembly.

We aren’t quite finished with the overall room yet.  The beds are done and we found some cool bedding and wall stickers, but Phase 2 will be adding some storage and cool stuff underneath the beds.  The boys are just thrilled and once again Super Rockstar has pulled off the impossible.

Thank you Lara! I think so too. Left up to me—they would probably be in sleeping bags on the floor. Haha!
