Update: The Honey Hole

Posted on February 7, 2020 by Jennifer Glenn

A couple of weeks ago, I wrote about a “honey hole” I found (you can read that here). Barney and I picked up a stash o stuff that someone had set out.  I’ve found that most folks would rather someone like me comes along and takes their stuff rather than it being buried in the city dump. Oh boy! Did I score big time with this one.  My haul included a wicker settee, a battery operated kids car (no battery), a plastic toddler play set, a rug, an umbrella, a shoe rack, and some gladiator/soldier type costumes.  I gave all the costume stuff to my boys(they were ecstatic!) and the shoe rack and umbrella I will hold on to until we have our garage sale this spring.  But, the other items I listed on Facebook Marketplace.  I started by doing a little research to estimate what they sold for as new and then I decided on a fair price based on their condition.  Here’s how I did:

Settee: Listed at $40.  Sold for $40.  I found out the guy that bought it was furnishing a space for his mother, so while he was loading it in his truck, I pulled out the rug to see if he would be interested in it as well.  He was.

Rug: I didn’t even have a chance to take a photo or list it.  Sold for $20.

Plastic Toddler Playset: Listed at $50. Sold for $40.  The lady that bought it was looking to freshen up her daycare with new fun things for the kids to play on.  I LOVED seeing this go to a good home where it will be well used.

Battery Operated Car: I was a little apprehensive about selling it without the battery–a replacement battery is around $25-30. Two high school boys made the purchase.  I was too chicken to ask what they planned to do with it. I’m just going to pretend it is going to be lovingly given as a gift to a much younger sibling.

Listed at $50. Sold for $50.

A load of free items that brought in $150.  All it took was a  little clean up (very little in this case), a few photos and posting them.  It’s not alway this easy, but it sure is fun when it is.

I love this! One of my favorite pastimes is finding thrift/free things, cleaning them up and selling or repurposing them! I have a business idea with this… we should talk!
